![]() ![]() While they are on the pricey side, after seeing how well they performed, we wouldn’t hesitate to buy them again. Because they fit more like flip-flops than the common cross-strap hiking sandal design, they allowed for more maneuverability in slippery conditions and the Vibram soles performed fantastically when hiking up wet granite in a river. They’re super comfortable and breathable. The three adjustment points make it easy to recalibrate for any hot spots that form. It took a few wears to break in the straps, but once that was done, it felt like we weren’t wearing anything. We conquered 10 hikes in these sandals, some in pretty harsh conditions. ![]() If you’re hitting the trail with your toes out and want something that can stand up to water crossings as well, the Cairn Adventure Sandals are your best option. ![]() There isn’t a lot of ankle support, and there are no half sizes available. The Details: Sizes: 5 to 11 | Velcro closure They don’t come in half sizes, so size up if you’re usually between. The Cosmic Waves come in two colors, an all-black build and lighter jadeite with red accents and a brown footbed. Truly, there was nothing we disliked about this sandal, and we’d buy them over and over again. There were no odors or signs of tear in our testing, and the velcro held up well. While they do bend a fair bit, they bounce right back to their original form and are clearly designed with comfort in mind. The build quality of the sandals feels like a sustainable design that won’t fall apart over time. We appreciated the barefoot-feel flexibility which blended with a soft step and supported foot. The soles feel ideal to the touch, while the synthetic leather straps are soft inside and out so there aren’t any issues with rubbing or chafing. There’s good heel shock absorption as well, and the soles are just flexible enough to allow for a more transitional step you feel propelled forward enough to skip. They hugged our feet in all of the right places, providing soft cushioning with every step and just enough arch support. Neither toes nor heels hung off during testing, and the footbed is made of a non-slip material to keep them in place. The adjustable ankle and toe straps ensure that they’ll fit like a dream on both skinny and larger feet via velcro fastening straps. Unfortunately, so far the brand did not respond to our requests for more information or an interview. There are only two colors available and no half sizes. Because of this, the flip-flops do not get a second life, a missed opportunity! We hope that Freedom Moses will take the plunge and start a collection program in the future. The harsh reality is that the slippers are not sorted out at existing waste processing companies and therefore end up with the rest of the garbage pile. Unfortunately, we could not find a collection program on the website. Shoes made from mono-materials are much easier to recycle anyway, than when a mix of materials are used. So Freedom Moses’ flip-flops can perfectly get a second life when they are broken. This is in contrast to PVC, where it is cheaper to make a new shoe than to recycle the material. The slippers made of PCU are easy to recycle. Since the slippers are made of artificial material though, they are not free of microplastics, which have an impact on biodiversity. The vegan shoe brand d oes not test on animals and the slippers do not contain any animal products. We have a hard time figuring out the exact working conditions and suppliers though. The brand guarantees on its website that it audits its factories and offers fair wages and safe working conditions to its workers. The slippers of Freedom Moses are made in Xiamen, China. PCU is greener than PVC, but it is certainly not environmentally friendly. As a result, oil is still required in production, which results in greenhouse gas emissions. The production of PCU requires less fossil fuels than PVC, but it is still an artificial product. PCU is made from rock salt and oil, with air and natural oils then injected into the plastic material. ![]() Several studies have shown that PVC is hugely harmful to the environment due to chemicals (dioxins) released during the manufacturing process. This material is an eco-friendly version of the widely used polyvinyl chloride ( PVC). The flip-flops are made from polycarbonate urethane ( PCU), an artificial material. ![]()
